Tusket River Chapter

Area of Interest
The Tusket River Chapter works to help protect and improve the Tusket River and all its habitat, and other systems in the Tri-County Region (namely Digby, Yarmouth and Shelburne counties) in southwest Nova Scotia.

Chapter Description
The primary goals of the Chapter include:
-Environmental Education, Stream Enhancement and Habitat Restoration
-Promoting ethical and sustainable sport fishing
-Monitor/evaluate stream impacting activity
-Mapping stream characteristics
-Promoting recreational use of our watersheds
-The Chapter works with local schools on the Yellow Fish Road™ program and also runs an annual Earth Day program aimed at educating youth about their role as stewards of the environment in a true “think globally, but act locally” fashion.

Chapter History
The Tusket River Chapter of Freshwater Conservation Canada was formed on Earth Day, April 22, 2005. In June 2007, the Chapter was given provincial responsibility for the Nova Scotia River Watch Program, as designated by the Inland Fisheries Advisory Committee, which has representation from our Chapter. River Watch is a volunteer fisheries monitoring program in which trained volunteers observe watershed activities all across the province, assuming a non-confrontational, educational approach. River Watch acts as a communication link between government and the general public and helps the government carry out the mandate to protect aquatic habitat and promote the sports fishing industry.

The Tusket River Chapter of Freshwater Conservation Canada and the Nova Scotia Department of Inland Fisheries have cooperatively made the Big Meadow Brook watershed upstream from the Highway 203 bridge in Kempt a Special Trout Management area. Working with the Department our Chapter has since 2012 worked to create and now help manage the project, which is the first Special Trout Management Area in western Nova Scotia. The Chapter would like to thank all anglers for their support and help in establishing and maintaining this project which will ensure a great brook trout fishery for future generations.
