2016 YFR Award Winner

Congratulations to Adam Eisele (right), a Grade 6 student from King George Elementary School for winning the 2016 Calgary Youth Science Fair’s Yellow Fish Road™ Award for his Water Filtration Project.

Adam’s in-depth study provided an exciting look at the microscopic world of Daphnia, a small water-based planktonic crustacean, and its role in filtration of waste water. His research brings to light that Daphnia live amongst the roots of water plants as suspension or filter feeders, removing loose bacteria and algae while providing a cleaning service, enabling a lake or pond system to become stable sooner. In this way, Daphnia could be used as biological filters and possibly become an alternative to technical filtration. Adam has proven himself to be a very knowledgeable and well-spoken young scientist with a keen understanding and interest in future applications using Daphnia, where water quality is poor at home and abroad.
