Meet Trout Unlimited Canada’s SWAT Crew

Welcome to TUC’s SWAT Crew.

This field season, TUC Ontario has called in the Small Watershed Action Team, also known as SWAT. Each Ontario chapter has selected stream rehabilitation projects that will help increase the quality and abundance of productive Brook Trout habitat. The team consists of Crew Lead, Alex Meeker and Crew Members, Jordan Graham and John Hunkin.

From Owen Sound to Niagara, the SWAT team will work on projects with the Greg Clark Chapter, Happy Trout Chapter, Middle Grand Chapter, Niagara Chapter, Speed Valley Chapter and Ted Knott Chapter.

Some of the tasks/projects that the SWAT team will be working on include:

  1. Stream narrowing using locally sourced woody materials and Christmas trees

  2. Removal of log-jams

  3. Installation of natural erosion control structures

  4. Creek-side plantings

  5. Fish community and habitat assessment

  6. Gathering baseline data that will help develop a strategic plan for future work

The SWAT is funded by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans through their Recreational Fisheries Conservation Partnership Program and through the generosity of our TUC Ontario Chapters.

TUC’s SWAT crew is eager to begin work this field season and are excited to make positive changes in our local streams. Stay tuned!
