Partners FOR the Saskatchewan River Basin (PFSRB) was contracted by the City of Saskatoon to be the local program coordinator to deliver Trout Unlimited Canada’s Yellow Fish Road Program™ for the spring and fall seasons of 2016. A program partnership that has proven to be extremely successful.
Previous to this partnership, the Meewasin Valley Authority and the Girl Guides of Canada (Saskatoon) had been stewards of the Yellow Fish Road Program™. However, both the Girl Guides of Canada (Saskatoon) and the Meewasin Valley Authority agreed to continue to promote and participate in the program. The Yellow Fish Road Program™ re-launched in Saskatoon with PFSRB to coincide with Canada Water Week on September 29th of this year. Social media, newspaper ads in the Star Phoenix and informational posters were distributed to make the Saskatoon public aware off the program. In September, CTV Saskatoon also aired an informational segment.
The Yellow Fish Road™ program provided Saskatonians with a number of actions and ways to keep pollutants out of storm drains for the spring snowmelt. Elementary schools were contacted directly to do the program in May and June of 2016 and further schools were booked to do painting and take part in Yellow Fish Road™ information sessions in September and October of 2016. The program ran from March 2016 until October 2016. This is likely the timeline that will exist for the 2017 season of the program. During the course of the program, 379 storm drains were painted across nine unique neighborhoods with 1,750 Yellow Fish Door Hangers being distributed to individual households in these neighborhoods. Thirteen schools and groups were engaged in the program through presentations.
Partners FOR the Saskatchewan River Basin (PFSRB) is dedicated to promoting watershed sustainability across the Saskatchewan River Basin through awareness, linkages and stewardship, knowledge and respect for the Saskatchewan River Basin ecosystem and heritage that will encourage sustainable use of the basin’s natural resources and nurture cultural values. Indeed, rivers have been instrumental in forming our Canadian identity and providing connections physically and intrinsically as a nation. PFSRB is delighted to be involved with the Yellow Fish Road™, a program which protects our rivers!
