The Shaganappi Community Creek Enhancement Project has officially kicked off earlier this fall. This project has been awarded funding through the Federated Cooperatives Ltd. Community Spaces Fund.
The project will take place over the course of 3 years, ending in September 2018, and will aim to restore the shoreline areas along an unnamed spring-fed tributary of the Bow River in Shaganappi Park, located in Southwest Calgary, and to install a pedestrian crossing over the creek to reduce stream bank erosion resulting from foot and dog traffic (pictured right). Note the lack of any vegetation along the banks of the creek as a result of heavy foot traffic and compacted soils.
The creek is a hidden gem, and provides a year-round source of cold clean water to the Bow River. Improving the shoreline area along this creek will provide habitat for birds, mammals, amphibians, and other urban wildlife and enhance the ecological integrity of the park.
The Shaganappi Community Creek Enhancement Project is a partnership between the City of Calgary, TUC, and the Shaganappi Community Association.
