TUC Helps Restore Stream Bank

Trout Unlimited Canada, in partnership with Toronto Regional Conservation Association (TRCA), Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH), and the Town of Ajax worked to restore a section of Duffins Creek this past fall.

In this stream segment Duffins Creek was suffering from a severely eroding stream bank. To stabilize it the bank slope was recut to a more natural angle and then it was reinforced with large and small stones.  A Log and stone deflector was built in the stream at the base of the slope to push the stream flow away from the bank and to create fish and wildlife habitat. The section of the Trans Canada Trail that runs along the bank was moved back a little to protect it more as well.  Trees and shrubs were planted to further stabilize the banks as their roots grow and anchor the bank material in place. This creek restoration project has improved water quality, aquatic habitat and creekside vegetation benefitting fish, and all other wildlife that live in and around Duffins Creek.

Funding for the project came from several organizations we could not do any of this great work without their support and we would like to thank them.  Funders included Ontario Trillium Foundation, Department of Fisheries and Oceans Recreational Fisheries Community Partnership Program, Enbridge Gas distribution, Trout Unlimited Canada, Ontario Anglers and Hunter’s Bring Back the Salmon Program Toronto Region Conservation Authority, and the Town of Ajax.
