Trout Unlimited Canada and our members were saddened to learn of the passing of Rick George from acute myeloid leukemia at the age of 67. Mr. George was a giant in the oil sands industry, transforming Suncor Energy into the country’s largest integrated energy company, including the $19.6-billion merger with Petro-Canada in 2009.
We were fortunate to know him for a different reason – his abiding love for the outdoors through fly fishing, hunting and other outdoor sports. Colorado born and raised, Rick’s love for the outdoors translated into active support for groups like Trout Unlimited Canada for whom he chaired our 2005 Calgary dinner. Under his leadership, TUC held its first ever dinner to hit the $1M mark. He also pushed TUC’s “Coldwater Conservation Fund” in order to set-up a stable, long-term funding base for our conservation efforts across the country.
We had the opportunity to get to know him better through several trips down the Bow River. He loved being on the river where one of his favourite phrases was “Foam is home.” This phrase is still in common use today to tell anglers fishing from a drift boat where to cast their dry flies.
Alberta lost a great friend and businessman with his passing. Our condolences and prayers go out to his wife Julie, sons Matthew, Zachary and daughter Emily.
